We have been noticing that the setting of this novel has a very complicated system of social classes. Find a line or a short passage that relates to social classes in these chapters. In your comment, be sure to quote your passage, give the page number, and explain what the passage tells us about social classes.
Page 55 "When Mr.Pontellier became rude, Edna grew insolant. She had resolved never to take another step backward." You can see that there are two different types of social classes, and that they contrast. Because in a normal creole relationship the woman would always take a step backward and would never ever be insolent. In this relationship you can see that it goes exacly the oposite way because Mr. Pontellier expects Edna to be like the other creole wifes and take a step backward. But she didin`t because she was from a different social class. This creates a contradiction, and they will fight because of this kind of things.

Page 29, "Shall I get you a pillow?" "There's one here," [Mrs.Pontellier] said. This passage shows the tendency from man in this time period to babysit their women. Edna is often ask politely by gentlemen. An example to prove this statement, as evident in the novel, Robert is shows incredible respect for her Mrs. Pontellier. In this creole society, women are treated more gently by a lot of men. However, a gentlemen like Mr. Pontellier treats Edna not as nice as she would like. So far, Mr. Pontellier is the most noticeable character who don't respect women.
