Robert leaves the country for Mexico, where he plans to make his fortune. Chapter XV p. 40 "As she started herself and was about to eat her soup, which have been served when she entered the room, serveal person informed her simulataneously that Robert was going to Mexico." From page 45, the third paragraph from the bottom, it reads "What had they talked about? Chiefly about his prospects in Mexico, which Mr. Pontellier thought were promising. How did he look? How did he seem-----grave, or gay, or how? Quite cheerful, and wholly taken up with the idea of his trip, which Mr, Pontellier found altogether natural in a young fellow about to seek fortune, and adventure in a strange, queer country."
ReplyDeleteThis is the quote from Mr. Pontellier's answers to Edna's curious questions about his meet with Robert, from which i can deduce that Robert, as an ambitious young man, would go to Mexico to seek fortune, to pursue a better life. Actually, from the previous contents i have read, i have sensed the strong desire of Robert to go to Mexico.
And on page 58, the last paragraph which mainly discussed the substance of the two letters from Robert----"He had met Montel, who was doing everything toward his advancement. So farm the financial situation was no improvement over the one he had left in New Orleans, but of course the prospects were vastly better."; "He inclosed a check to his mother."
These two places is a indication that Robert is in Mexico for financial purposes, perhaps not only for himself but also for his mother, to improve the life for both of them.
in page 40 chapter XV, '' there's nothing much to explain'' said Robert. He was looking at Edna chiefly when he said that. Therefor, according from that passage you can see that there is something between Robert and Edna. The reason why he had to go to Mexico maybe is because he had business need to do, he doesn't want to miss the opportunity just because of a woman. or maybe he is scared that he will really have a feeling for Edna witch is not good because she is married already.

In chapter 16, page 45: "Quite cheerful, and wholly taken up with the idea of his trip, which Mr. Pontellier found altogether natural in a young fellow about to seek fortune, and adventure in a strange, queer country". He's young and ambitious. He knows that this is the important key in his life and he can't miss it. Moreover, he didn't tell Edna about that. He doesn't want to make Edna impressed and hardly let him go. Even he feels opression and sorry but he just "pressed her hand and went away in the direction of the beach".
