After reading those chapter of Awakening, i noticed that some plot of the story relate to our real life. For example, many women gave up their lives or careers for the husbands and their children. And after all, a lot of women they just realized that they are not as happy as before anymore. Taking care of the kids and being a housewife started to get tiring. Children being annoying and husband wasn't as sweet as he used to be. This is the connection that i found similar with the book.
The novel "The Awakening" may seem irrelevant to nowadays for many people, who believe that the society described in the book does not exist any more. Such societies still exist, maybe with other names than "Creole" or with no names, but with the same mentality. Coming from a country where people are not very open-minded, I have seen a real life examples of both characters Edna and Adele. Some women get married to a man, who, they know, would never allow them to work or develop as a person. They do understand that they have to commit their whole life to the family and children but still make the choice of marrying those men. In the case of Edna-kind women, they end up regretting their choice. They get tired of the same life-style and as Jocelyn stated, get annoyed of their husbands and children. But on the other hand, there are some Adele-kind women, who do not regret their choice. They are happy with their family, with their children's achievements, with how their family is strong. Sometimes, it's the women's choice to have that life rather than the obligation of the society . It is their choice to raise good children, to make sure they have a good, strong family, rather than have a more exciting life of working 5 days a week and maybe not having enough time for their family. I do believe that this book shows both types of the women in our society and makes us understand that each of us will be happy in a certain way. By contrasting Edna being not satisfied with her life and Adele, having a satisfied and happy life, it emphasizes the idea of us doing whatever our personality dictates us, whether or not it is accepted by the society.
For this moment, I believe that the book "Awakening" can be categorized as - classic, because there would always be people's problems about family relationship, difference of social classes, happiness and image of the “ideals”. Everything got their standard, etalon that we compare with. In this book Adele is the etalon of the “ideal” woman. She is the “mother-woman”, the one who takes care of their children and her husband more than about herself, depriving her chances for happiness. “She was keeping up her music on account of the children, she said; because she and her husband both considered it a means of brightening the home and making it attractive”. The image of “Adele” still exists in nowadays; moreover you can see it very often. I can see mothers looking very tired and untidy, because they don’t have time on themselves, they are busy taking care of their children, husband and looking after her house. I understand that it’s not their fault, this is natural basic instinct of all animals and humans – to defend their children, but they don’t understand that the best way to educate your children is giving a good example for them. Children look at their parents and copy them. They don’t know if it’s good or bad, they just copy everything that they do. If a daughter sees her mother always looks pretty and neatly, a girl would be taking care about herself and always looking pretty and neatly too. If a son sees his father helping to his mother, in future he would be helping to his wife too. But the same thing happens when parents argue with each other. If parents get divorced or a child sees his father hitting mother, he would learns that families can be unhappy. That’s why, if parents their children to be happy, children should not be the only meaning of their life. Do not educate your child. Anyway he/she is going to be like you. Educate yourself!
The Awakening this book is an example of family relationship and freedom and to describe a girl after married became a woman's psychological feeling. As example many people they after married. they will feel so different like do not have better relationship the before married. And will star quarrel or because of other reason. make so many troubles between both. other example about freedom as the first chapter a parrot stay in cage and can speak so many differnet languages. but the parrot is not free just like describe a person so many people who still do no have freedom in some country. like we as student everyday going to school but i do not want to go. our parent force us to go this is not a freedom. but as long as we get old maybe we can understand but maybe will some more freedom or family problem coming up. so i think this book have so many connection with the life now.
When the guest were fake praising Madmoiselle Reisz's performance to covering their ignorant taste, Madmoiselle doesn't really care. Because in her opinion that everyone didn't worth it and the they definitely don't understand what she was trying to say during her musical instrument. Once when i was playing the saxophone in my garage, a man just said he liked it and said that i will become a good musician lately. But what i was doing was just playing some basic gamut. He just pretending that he knows a little bit so he won't look foolish when he talks to me. When Madmoiselle finished her playing and walking straight back to her room, she shows her opinion that she will never have the same tastes on music and she will change her mind because the most people thinks the different way. In my opinion, Madmoiselle is a very great woman, she knows that she is going to do and how she deals with the people who goes with the flow.
After reading few first chapter of The Awakening, I realize that Edna Pontellier have the same circumstances with women in my home country. In my home country, from the past till nowadays, there is no equality between men and women. In the story, Mr. Pontellier - husband of Edna, he didn't respect Edna. He always think that his class is higher than Edna and he can make money so he can do whatever he wants. He feels dissatisfied at Edna and when he feels bad he can scolded at Edna. About Edna, she can't decide or make decision in anything. Rarely she share her thought and feeling to other people. My home country culture, men are more powerful than women. They alway have priority and they never be assessment. In my opinion, the connection of the story and real life is the equality between men and women.
The book brings us the story of women who, after they get married, do everything for their husbands, they give up their freedom and individuality to live the life of a mother woman ,the perfect woman and mom in that time. We cannot say that this doesn't happen anymore because even if in my country this is not common, there are a lot of countries that this situantion still exsists. This is something that happens based on the culture and should not be judged by anyone. This kind of women like Adele and even Edna are women that could have decided whether to live like that or not. This is what I think that are the connections between the book "The Awakening" and the real life nowadays.
As a reader i really think that this novel is giving me the reasons why does our culture have connection with 'The Awakening'. Firstly, woman nowadays have their own rights and responsibility to take care of their children.Secondly, today woman can make money by their own hands and they are not depend on men anymore that is one of some examples for this idea! Furthermore, woman nowadays can teach their children to live by themself; their mothers don't want them to live depend on their parents. For example, Edna left her children stood up by themself when they had fallen. However, in some situations the children are not good enough to live without dependent because they are not good kids they won't listen to their mom or dad and do whatever they want to do! Thus, in this society, people are changed, they are living with high-class and keep improving it...
As can be seen from The Awakening, there is still one more connection between the society back in the past and the society nowadays. The word "quadroon" here means one-quarter ancestry black. Moreover, it indicates racism which has been a big problem until now. For example, the quadroon nurse takes care Mr.Pontellier's children with a respectful attitude by keeping distance.Furthermore, she can not be a Creole because of her one-quarter ascentry black and gets disrespect from other people. Nowadays, there are some countries where racism still exists such as calling black people "******". In addition, on the internet hate sites are created to express hatred toward different racial groups.
After i read these chapters, i found something that can reflect a general social phenomenon that the women and men are still not be considered as the same, in 'The Awakening' Mrs Pontellier are expected to be a good mother women and just need to take care of her children at home, she has not as much right as her husband does, she has no freedom, she is always fettered or bounded by some traditional conservative views, the same thing in nowadays social, women become more and more intelligent and have more place, but still are kind of suppressed by men.
For many years, gender equality still is a important problem of our society. Though the condition of the women in society has improved a lot, but still not good enough. In the story of the Awakening the Mrs.Pontellier (Edna) is been considered as a perfect wife and a perfect mother. As her husband is a member of Cerole, the mainstream of society would criticize her a lot for any behavior that is not good enough to fit the Ceroles' view, and she will meet a lot of resistance from those other member in the cerole, even other women will blame her for “unruly” act.So what she will made and face later is easy to perdict. The disapperance of those complex rule is one of the biggest improvement.
