In chapter XII, page number 31 "The stillest hour of the night had come, the hour before dawn, when the world seems to hold its breath. The moon hung low, and had turned from silver to copper in the sleeping sky. The old owl no longer hooted, and the water-oaks had ceased to moan as they bent their heads". As can be seen from those sentences, the author described a landscape which is our main characters Edna and her husband take place. She is excellent in describe this landscape through the diction she used such as : the stillest hour, the world hold its breath, the moon lung low,... . Moreovers she used one of the literary terms is personification such as : the world can hold its breath and the oaks stopped to moaning as they bent their heads. She made all the things and the landscape have their own lives. It is a animated picture of landscape. In my opinion, she also used another literary term which is metaphor. The clue is, we can see it changes form midnight to dawn, so does Edna's personality. There is something has changed in her mind and her thinking, she changed that why she didnt want to yield Robert anymore. One more time, the author did a great job in describe and foreshadowing us through those sentences

ReplyDeleteAt this moment,the Creole class were garther to chat together, and a band was playing down the Klein's hotel. The describe of the circumstance made a bright comparesion of the envierment. The quote descibe a tender night as if the hole world was slience, the moon light even brighter than the lights in the Klein's hotel. The describtion made readers forgot the lively Klein's hotel, but to focus in this tender night, because it is so quite and clam. Edna was attracted by the beautiful night, and walked to the ocean. I think this quote made a side affect to Edna's mental world. I felt Enda was delightful, this quite moonlit places is like Edna's secret world. Edna begin to focus in her mental world.

ReplyDeleteThis sentence from chapter X in The Awakening. This’s pretty heavy-handed symbolism. "Where no woman had swum before!" Edna hopes to surpass existing convention regarding female behavior.
